When I eat out, I often think about things that I used to order compared to what I order now. Tonight, for example, Toby and I went to a pub for dinner. In the olden days I would have ordered fish and chips, but tonight I ordered a salad (minus the feta cheese that was listed on the menu). It was a great salad! I ordered a side of broccoli rabe, too, because even though it tastes… how do I put this nicely… disgusting, it is SO good for you!
In this post I started to examine the differences between my eating habits before and then after switching to vegan.
Comparisons (written July 26, 2010)
I find it interesting to compare what I eat nowadays compared to what I would have eaten had I not stopped eating animal products. I’m going to name a few dishes that I’ve eaten recently and compare it to what I would have eaten otherwise (because the dish was on the menu, or we had it in our apartment at the time).
Friday breakfast
What I would have eaten: 2 slices wholegrain bread with Vegemite and margarine [I've totally converted back to eating delicious Vegemite now! But I have it on my favorite organic flax quinoa bread from Whole Foods, instead of supermarket bread that takes weeks to go stale.]
What I ate: 1 slice whole wheat bread with peanut butter
Saturday lunch
What I would have eaten: Margherita pizza (2 slices)
What I ate: Spaghetti with tomato sauce [Australians and NZers, I mean pasta with a tomato sauce, not tinned spaghetti with ketchup!]
Sunday brunch
What I would have eaten: Eggs Benedict
What I ate: Non-dairy pumpkin soup and a salad with tofu and grilled vegetables
Sunday dinner
What I would have eaten: Tuna salad sandwich
What I ate: Panini with tomato, lettuce and mushrooms
Sunday supper
What I would have eaten: Caramel Tim-Tams
What I ate: Honey dew melon, and hummus and crackers
Monday snack
What I would have eaten: Chocolate cake with cream filling and frosting (work party)
What I ate: Almonds
I am definitely noticing a difference to how I feel and look, so it is all worth it! Not to mention the ethical impact this has, which is more important than myself.
