First day as a vegan

I wrote this on my first full day of being a vegan. Can you believe that I talk about milk AGAIN? Of course you can believe it! That brings my total of milk-related posts to 4 out of the 5 I had written so far.

BBQ dinner, vegan-style (written July 10, 2010)

I began my day by with a breakfast of hummus on toast with sliced tomato, and then followed up with my leftover pizza from the evening before for lunch. Both meals were healthier than the meals I would have normally eaten: the toast would have normally had Vegemite and butter, and the pizza of course would have had cheese.

After lunch Toby and I went to the supermarket and I picked out a few ingredients for vegan meals. We got some peanut butter, bread, more hummus, more tomatoes, bananas and soy milk. I don’t even want to talk about the soy milk… but I will. It is awful! I can’t stand it! I forced down a glass though, and I plan to add some Nesquik chocolate syrup from now on until I get used to the taste of soy milk, or at least forget the taste of cow’s milk! [I never did get used to the taste of soy milk, even when I added chocolate syrup. I converted to almond milk instead and I love it!]

Dinner last night was quite challenging. We went to a BBQ restaurant. We had arranged to meet some friends from out of town at the restaurant before the vegan idea had ever occurred to me. Anyway, I knew it would be hard, but not that hard! Aside from the sides (collard greens and corn on the cob), there was only one dish on the menu that I could eat: grilled vegetables. [I now know that collard greens are often prepared with meat or meat juices, so I couldn't have eaten them anyway.]

I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the veggies were! And the meal was far healthier than any other meal I would have normally ordered. I almost always used to order a pulled pork sandwich with mashed potato and gravy. That meal has very little nutritional value so I am happy, again, that I am making this lifestyle change!
