Wow, it has been a while since I last posted a vegan diary entry. In this post I bought my first vegan book (my “idiot” book), change my mind about chik’n patties (temporarily), and learn about something else I can’t eat as a vegan.
Vegan Idiot (written July 16, 2010)
This will be a quick update before I leave to catch a bus to Boston! I’m meeting up with Toby and his dad, who is visiting America for a few weeks and is attending a conference in Boston. Toby’s work sent him there this week- what are the chances? So this is a good excuse for me to visit beautiful Boston!
I ate my leftover risotto yesterday. It was delicious, again! But I needed it to be piping hot- not sure why it tasted better like that, I usually prefer things warm, not hot. For dinner I ate chik’n burgers again and they were much better this time! I fried them in olive oil instead of baking them, so it was not quite as healthy this time around but they were much nicer tasting. They will be a treat, though, just like regular burgers are, because they aren’t very nutritious.
After work I went to Barnes & Noble and bought ‘The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vegan Living’ by Beverly Lynn Bennett and Ray Sammartano. My friend Michelle pulled it off the shelf as a joke, but when I flipped through it I realized that it was exactly what I needed! I started reading it on the train ride home and it is fantastic! I read more on the train ride to work this morning, and I will read it on the bus today. A lot of it is reinforcing what I already read online, but I learned that I can’t eat gelatin (I didn’t know it was made from animal parts!) and I am encouraged and inspired by what I am reading in the book- and by the fact that I am reinforcing what I have learned on a daily basis.
This weekend will be a test. I will have to tell my first family member about my new lifestyle, and I will be on holiday so I won’t be able to eat what I am familiar with. At least I know I can’t eat fries now! And for everything I am unsure about, I will just avoid it (if possible).
